Patients and Doctors are often confused about how to manage medications that are considered “controlled substances”. There is a strict chain of custody, enforced by the DEA, from the manufacturer to the consumer.
Until now (or, …tomorrow, when it goes into the federal register) the patient has been left with few options for formal disposal. Providers can be placed into awkward situations where patients attempt to “give it back”. Having unused medications around can invite theft, abuse, sharing, even overdose events.
The new rule will create lawful opportunities for controlled medication disposal.
You can download an advance copy of the rule. Make sure you allow pop-ups because it will open in a new window.
There are some practical implications for this information that impact providers, that I will discuss in my upcoming Webinar, you can get a preview here.
